A pylon sign is the piece of signage that has to work at speed and distance. Set back from the road on a plaza or an arterial route, it needs to be legible from several hundred metres, hold up to real wind load, and — if it carries multiple tenants — allow panels to be changed without dismantling the structure.

These are engineered projects rather than fabrication jobs. Footing design, pole sizing, wind load and electrical supply all have to be resolved before anything is built, and almost every BC municipality will require a permit with structural documentation.

Construction

Steel pole or poles set into an engineered concrete footing, with a fabricated aluminium cabinet. Faces are typically pan-formed polycarbonate or acrylic with push-through or routed copy. Tenant panels slide into an extruded retainer system so a changeover is a twenty-minute job rather than a crane call.

It varies considerably by municipality and zoning — commonly between 6m and 10m for commercial zones, with some highway commercial corridors permitting more. We check the applicable bylaw for your specific address before designing, because height and total face area are usually the two constraints that shape the whole design.

Plan on three to five months end to end. Design and engineering take three to four weeks, permitting typically six to twelve weeks depending on the municipality, fabrication four to six weeks, and installation is usually a two-day operation including the footing cure.

For virtually every pylon, yes. Municipalities require sealed structural drawings for freestanding signage. We coordinate with a BC-registered structural engineer and include that cost in the quote so there are no surprises.

Very often the structure is sound and only the cabinet and faces need attention. Reskinning the cabinet, retrofitting LED and fitting new faces typically costs a fraction of a full replacement and avoids re-permitting an existing non-conforming height.
